Old Carter Whiskey Co. Tasting Event
What an epic evening last week with Mark and Sherri Carter from Old Carter Whiskey Co.! I had originally reached out to them on Instagram for a sample of their whiskies which they graciously sent over. As soon as I tasted the samples I was blown away by flavors and quality of each one, and instantly had to find out where I could get my hands on a bottle. I reached back out to them to find this out and they told me that unfortunately at the moment it was only available in Kentucky. I immediately thought, well, it’s time to go back to Kentucky or at least have my cousin who lives in Kentucky hunt a bottle down for me immediately. Before I could finish that thought, the next message came through from the Carters. They said they were down in San Diego for some meetings and would be driving up to Los Angeles for another meeting in a few days and would love to meet me if I had time. They suggested it would be fun to do a tasting and the stars aligned perfectly to throw together a really incredible event at an amazing Speakeasy Bar called Oak & Iron in Thousand Oaks, CA. The owners, Jared and Jason, were so gracious in letting us use the space for the night, and the Mixologist Paul Jones was awesome helping pour all the tastings for us, and making us some awesome cocktails at the end. Several local bourbon and whiskey enthusiasts also came out to enjoy it with us. It was a really amazing night meeting all of these people with a common love for spirits. The Carters brought some amazing stuff for us to taste. We tried the Batch #2 Bourbon, Batch #3 Rye, Batch #4 Rye, 12yr Small Batch American Whiskey, and 2 of the Very Old Carter 27 Year, one of which only yielded 30 bottles. I highly recommend getting your hands on literally any of these if you can. With Mark’s background of his 100 point wines and their founding of Kentucky Owl, there is simply no way to go wrong with any of their selections. My personal favorite was the 12yr Small Batch American Whiskey which comes in at a whopping 134.9 Proof, with a depth of flavor and mouthfeel unlike anything I have had before. That stuff was unreal! I was also a huge fan of the Batch 3 and 4 rye definitely some of the best rye I have ever had, and I love the story behind the “Dueling Ryes” where Mark and Sherri each come up with a blend and see which people like more. It has become something really fun for them and they say so far people have been about 50/50 on which one they like better. Grab a taste of each if you have the opportunity and see which one is your favorite. I also enjoyed tasting the 27 year old offerings. They were pretty special unicorns, so unique for a whiskey of that age. I cannot say enough good things about these products and the wonderful people behind them. The Carters are a class act. They are such warm, welcoming, gracious and generous people. Thanks again for sharing with us little guys. I appreciate all you did for us to create an incredible evening of tastings, good conversation, knowledge and fun! Cheers to you guys!
