Treaty Oak Distillery Austin, TX

Founded by Daniel Barnes, and located about 22 miles outside downtown Austin, TX among the rolling hills and sprawling oaks of Texas Hill Country, lies a local treasure. Treaty Oak was only the 4th distillery to open in Texas, and has since fathered several varieties of bourbon, gin, rum, wine and soon beer. The Waterloo Antique Gin is really unique and was like nothing I have had before. It almost drank like a whiskey and finished like a gin. I will definitely be adding that one to my collection. Their gins are all grain to glass as is their Ghost Hill Bourbon which was one of my favorites. With notes of oak, corn, vanilla, and a bit of spice it was a great one to sip on while touring the amazing property. My wife was really impressed with their wine, in particular their Rose, and said it was one of the best she has had. We also loved the Old Yaupon Gin which was also really special and distinctive. The Cocktail Lab is also amazing offering some awesome craft cocktails. Finally, Alice’s Restaurant has incredible food and some really awesome tapped cocktails. My favorite was the Barrel Aged Old Fashioned. I highly recommend it. With a growing number of awards, its obvious Treaty Oak knows what they are doing when it comes to creating amazing spirits. Perhaps though the root of that special magic of Treaty Oak that so many people mention after they’ve visited, is the true sense of family among everyone who works here. Each person is integral in the running of Treaty Oak, and you get the sense that all are encouraged to push boundaries and be creative while experimenting in their craft. At the same time, everyone works harmoniously as a team to create something quite special. Alice Barnes, mother of Founder Daniel Barnes, is an amazing person. We ran into her on our tour. Such a sweet and kind soul, she was excited to share the whole story of Treaty Oak with us. From the inspiration for starting the distillery to the amazing artifacts they have dug up on property during expansion, to the plans for growing their own grains, and even a possible onsite cooperage, and so much more.
